What is this triangle in Google Earth?

I found this thing in Google Earth, I don't know what it is. It looks like an equilateral triangle etched into the ground, with each side about 0.78 miles long. It is just northwest of Phoenix, Arizona. The exact coordinates are Latitude (33掳44'42.54"N) Longitude (112掳37'58.17"W). Can anyone tell me what this is.What is this triangle in Google Earth?
I just googled "triangle map phoenix" and it pointed me right back here to yahoo answers!

Looks like it is an old auxiliary airstrip for training during WWII

You can see the original question here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?鈥?/a>

Check out his sources. The one link he posted has a lot of good info.
I remember reading or seeing something on TV about this. It's man made. I think NASA and the Air Force, maybe more than the Air Force, constructed the roads in the triangular pattern. I think it was training site for Shuttle missions, and it has been abandoned by the military and NASA. I haven't looked at the other links in the other answers, but I found it on Google Map. I had relatives who lived in Sun City when this was constructed and was used as a training ground. Whatever TV show I saw was shot there when it was a training ground. It probably was a Nova multi-episode on PBS.

It is not hoax perpetrated by Google Earth. It's real, and if it isn't limited access ground, which it probably is, you can hike there and walk on those roads. Phoenix has a major Air Force baseWhat is this triangle in Google Earth?
Today's aircraft can land in much crosswind. But in the days of taildraggers (tiny third wheel under the tail) the danger of ground loop was real in crosswind.

Runways had to be in different directions. One way to do this is to have them radiate from a center. But then, only one runway could be used at the time to avoid collision.

The triangular shape of runways is the most common for older airfield. This one near Phoenix is not any different.

Today, modern airports have only one runway in the direction of the prevailing winds. If it is a busy airport, they build a second runway, parallel to the first one and call them Left and Right. One is used for take off and the other, for landing.

Incidentally ... I am a pilot. What is this triangle in Google Earth?
Think that's weird? Take a look at this 50掳 0'38.20"N 110掳 6'48.32"W on google earth. Like said before it most likely is an airstrip. If you look really close on the right side of it you can still see the centre line for it. It looks like it's been abandon for some time as you can see on the left side it's been turned into a trail for 4x4s.
It is a con trick by Google Earth. They have enhanced symbols and fake stuff all over their maps to make them more interesting and in some places to hide what is really there. Look also for ufo's aliens and sea monsters.
