I was on Google Maps logged in my Google Account when I realized that there was a section named "check-in done" (it's in My places%26gt;More). What is it for? Is it part of Google Latitude or something?

That's a function of Google Latitude, a "social" function allowing you to let your circle of friends know where you are presently located, it's also a local marketers dream.
