How does google latitude find a location of a PC?

on a mobile, i can understand it would use GP or A-GPS to track down a location of a user, but how does google find out the location of a user on a PC/laptop ??

I've been using it today, and my location is quite a bit off to where i am, does it get the location of your place from the IP address? or IP address from the closest exchange to your place?

I do understand your IP address is capable of tracking down your precise city/suburb but can it get any more accurate than that? If not, then wouldn't google's latitude provide false information about PC users' locations on a map?

fyi - im from new zealandHow does google latitude find a location of a PC?
What the person before me said is incorrect. The IP address is assigned to an ISP which them translates into the location of the ISP, not you directly. Certain IP addresses are assigned to regions of the World. That is why ist is so general of an area. But things like the ipod touch have a location finder thru wifi (if thats what you are talking about) it uses WPS which is like GPS except it uses wifi to triangulate your position.
Explaining WPS and how creepy it is is important. A company called Skyhook maintains a database of Wi-Fi access points using other Wi-Fi access points, satellites, and cell towers. So basically, this company knows where your Wi-Fi network is within 10-20 meters.

It will use your ip address, which cannot get your exact locations(only your ISP can do that with your IP address)

I hook my garmin nuvi up to my computer to get the right location :)

you're not going to get your exact location without a garmin gps or a magellan gps.

thumbs down? fine I don't know how it gets that location from the IP...How does google latitude find a location of a PC?
mc is right: it picks up the location of the server your ISP uses: even if you use mobile internet it still uses server location.
